Information

There are tens of thousands of vessels on the world's oceans, not to mention countless recreational and personal watercraft. With all these ships on the water, things are bound to break down.

What are the most common engine problems on ships? How can you prevent them? Read on for everything you need to know!

1. Electrical Issues

One of the most common causes of engine breakdown on ships is electrical issues. Saltwater is tough on electrical components, and it's easy for something to wear down or get a short.

It's wise to check all your electrical components regularly. It's also critical to use electrical components designed to handle the stresses of the ocean. It doesn't take much to break things!

2. Fuel Issues

A lot of ships break down because of fuel system issues, even with a new ship engine. These can be issues with the fuel lines, inside the engine, or with the fuel itself. Even something as simple as running out of fuel can be a big problem if you're out on the ocean!

Boaters have to be especially careful of the diesel bug. This contamination of fuel can gum up a system and wreck an engine!

3. Engine Overheating

This is another big cause of boat breakdowns. Several things can cause an engine to overheat, but it's always a serious issue that needs prompt attention to start fixing the engine parts.

Blocked intakes and faulty strainers are some of the most common causes. Another common cause is a damaged water pump impeller.

4. Tangled Items in Propellers

Trash and debris can often tangle in your propellers. This can quickly cause your boat and motor to malfunction.

This is tough to avoid, but regular cleaning of your propellers can keep them operating freely. Sometimes this can be done on the water, but other times you'll need to dock first.

5. Filters and Plugs

Clogged filters and fouled plugs are other common reasons for your boat to lose power. If things are gummed up, your motor won't work as intended.

If you break down, you should clean and replace your filter to see if that's your issue. If you have a gas motor, it's also wise to check your spark plugs to ensure they're clean and working properly.

6. Damaged Prop

Many things can damage your boat's prop. Even a small nick, gouge, or imbalance can cause your prop to vibrate and lose power.

It's not always obvious what's causing your prop to malfunction, so you may need to take your ship to shore to work on repairs.

7. Shifting Issues

Sometimes an engine has trouble shifting into gear. If this happens, there are a few things that could be causing it.

A shorted fuse can sometimes be the cause, but only if you have electronic controls. Oftentimes, shifting problems are caused by an issue with the mechanical cable shift. Other times, it's a problem with your transmission, which requires major repairs out of the water.

8. Drive Belts

A belt breaking can leave you without a water pump or alternator, which can cascade into other issues. You'll often first notice a problem when you lose voltage or your engine light comes on.

Checking your belts and other engine parts is critical for preventing engine breakdowns. It's always good to have a spare belt on hand so that you can replace it yourself while on the water.

9. Battery Issues

Many boaters forget to check their batteries and battery terminals before going out on the water. A low or dead battery can quickly cause a lot of trouble!

Your electrical system is vital for everything from your navigational lighting to your starter motor. Always charge or replace dead batteries before you're stuck on the water with no power!

10. Other Mechanical Failures

It's tough to list all of the many possible vessel engine breakdown causes. Sometimes parts wear out, or sometimes damage causes them to fail.

It's good to have the spare parts, tools, and knowledge to fix vessel engine damage. Even if you can only limp to shore, it's better than breaking down completely!
